Crandall Building Aspen

Crandall Building Aspen

As one of Aspen’s architectural pinnacles, the Crandall Building Aspen has served as a hub for local businesses dating back to the late sixties. Originally designed and built by famous Aspen local and friend Thomas W. Benton, Dr. Jack Crandall envisioned a place where his medical office could thrive. Those in Aspen remember Benton not only for his architecture, but also for his involvement in local and national politics where he designed anti-war “peace” posters.  Dr. Crandall’s medical practice thrived and the Patio Building, as it was then called, has since become iconic to the city. Dr. Crandall was a mobile man, however, and he frequently made house calls in his jeep and delivered babies to families throughout the valley. After his retirement in 2009, he stayed close by throughout his management of the commercial Crandall Building in Aspen. Sadly, Dr. Crandall passed away in 2012 and so the name was changed to the Crandall Building in remembrance. Owners and developers Jane and Greg Hills, who took over following Dr. Crandall’s retirement, voluntarily agreed to historically designate the building.

The building furnished not only 1970’s architectural styles, but featured outdated mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems as well. In an effort to help local businesses thrive and keep costs affordable for everyone, the Hills decided to renovate the historic structure with city council’s approval.  In an attempt to maximize energy efficiency and sustainability, the original structure was not demolished but instead redeveloped and renovated entirely.  In 2009, Aspen city council approved the development of a 2,500-square-foot-free-market condo to top off the 12,00-square-foot property. While working side-by-side with Aspen’s Historic Preservation Committee, the rooftop is encapsulated by a 2,000 square foot wrap around deck, making it an ideal residential rental unit in the heart of Aspen.  With renovations finished in 2009, the property remains an ideal location for local businesses to thrive.  Today, the Crandall Building Aspen is home to Sandy’s Office Supply, as well as Aspen Valley Pediatrics.
